Spooky Saturday

Updated: May 13, 2020

It was one of the club Saturdays in the garden, where two colleagues turned friends shared a bungalow. They left for the club supper after instructing the staff that they would be late so the chowkidaar needs to walk the dog and be alert and wait for them to return.

As is customary in the plantation clubs, the evening turned into a long night and the friends returned back in high and happy spirits. The bungalow gate is usually locked by the chowkidaar but when they returned, they were taken by surprise to find that no one came to open the gate but it gave way. They drove through and parked the car in the porch. Both were a bit tiddly but they entered the door and were dazed again to find that door too wide open.

Their eyes met a strange sight on the sitting room sofa. The chowkidaar was snoring away merrily and so was the German Shepherd at his feet as soft music played on the music system. Angry at the negligence of the chowkidaar, they prodded him while shouting his name but it was in vain. There was no response. The dog, however, was happy to see his masters and wagged his tail vigorously. The two friends stared at each other and now impatient, shouted even more angrily in the chowkidaar’s ears while one of them prodded him again. The chowkidaar, pie-eyed slowly looked at them, stood up and fumbling reached the back door of the bungalow and sped away as fast as his legs could carry him. The two friends decided to call it a night and deal with the chowkidaar the next morning.

The next day, he was summoned to the office and an enquiry started for his strange behaviour. The chowkidaar retorted, he was not willing to work in this particular bungalow any more. So, both of them after giving him an earful, scoffing him a bit for his odd behaviour ordered him to come back to his duty at night. However, he was adamant. On enquiring further, he had his reasons.

He explained that the bungalow was haunted and the ghosts had been troubling him for quite a while. The previous night, the ghosts had paid him a visit again and that too, this time two ghosts had come together. Last night was the strangest of all, as these two ghosts had been prodding and tickling even his ears. The ghosts looked exactly like the evil twins of these two saabs.

The two friends in utter disbelief had a hearty laugh at the silly chowkidaar’s delusion.
